For the Orchid lover, learning to care for Orchids in the winter months is crucial.  In caring for Orchids in the winter means that they can learn how to enjoy their Orchids year round.  Further, learning the essentials in terms of caring for Orchids in the winter not only ensures maximum enjoyment for the gardener, but it also promises instant home beautification year round.

So what is involved in caring for Orchids in the winter?  Exactly how complicated is it to begin caring for Orchids in the winter?  Actually it is fairly easy to care for Orchids in the winter months.  In fact, gardeners will find that Orchids grow slower during the winter months and subsequently do not require the attention they typically require during the warmer months of the year.  You will not have to feed or water your Orchids as much because they are growing at a slower pace in the winter months—that means less work for you in terms of Orchid maintenance.

Similarly, when you are caring for Orchids in the winter you will find that they do not demand as much fertilizer as they do in the summer months.  While Orchids should be fertilized once a week during the months of spring and summer, when winter arrives your Orchids will only require fertilizer once a month.  Therefore, once again, your Orchids will require less maintenance in the winter months.

Conversely, some of the techniques you use to care for your Orchids in the summer will still hold true when you are caring for Orchids in the winter.  For instance, when caring for Orchids in the winter, your Orchids will still require a nice balance between light and shade and your Orchids will also require a comfortable atmosphere in which they can grow.  Therefore, keeping your Orchids away from heat generating sources is extremely important.

Likewise, when caring for Orchids in the winter you will still have to be careful not to over feed, over water, or over fertilize your Orchid.  Your Orchid only needs so many nutrients to grow healthy, strong and beautiful.  Therefore, be careful not to become overzealous in your attempt to care for your Orchids in the winter or in the summer.

Similarly, Orchids require the same climate control when caring for Orchids in the winter as they require when you are caring for Orchids in the spring and summer months.  Orchids do well in temperatures from 55-75 degrees Fahrenheit and will falter if they are exposed to sudden and shocking changes in temperature.  Therefore, when caring for Orchids in the winter make sure to keep an eye on the temperature indoors to keep your Orchids at their healthiest.

Finally, just because you are caring for Orchids in the winter indoors, it does not mean that your Orchids cannot still be threatened by disease.  In fact, in the colder winter months Orchids are susceptible to fungal infections and you should keep a close eye on your Orchid for such instances.
