The Basics of Yoga

So you are interested in Yoga but you want to learn some of the Yoga basics before you decide to take up Yoga.  Wise move—understanding the basics of Yoga will help you better understand the exercises, the philosophy behind the exercises and just what Yoga can do for you.  Thus, in looking to find out more about Yoga basics, you have taken the first step to a healthier you!

The first tenet of Yoga basics is that Yoga is a form of exercise that is meant for the physical body and the mind.  In other words, as you learn Yoga basics you will find that much of the exercises involved in the practice of Yoga are just as much for mind improvement as they are for physical improvement.  In fact, when learning Yoga basics you will find out about mantras and mediations that will help you improve your memory, the speed of your thought processes and your overall thought clarity.

The second tenet of Yoga basics is that Yoga is a form of exercise that helps you reconnect with the universe. The third tenet of Yoga basics is that Yoga is a practice that involves significant discipline on behalf of the practitioner.  For instance, you will be required to implement breathing exercises, exercise on a regular basis, and follow the basic principles of Yoga if you desire to achieve the full affect that Yoga has to offer.  Also one of the Yoga basics is that you get out of the exercises what you put in—thus, if you lack dedication, willpower, or the desire to pursue Yoga exercises, you will not reap the full benefits of the practice.

The forth tenet of Yoga basics is that you must have patience when you begin practicing Yoga.  All practitioners familiar with Yoga basics will tell you that becoming a master of Yoga exercises takes time and your mastery of such exercises will happen in slow, progressive stages, not in leaps and bounds.  Thus, if you desire to see immediate improvement physically or mentally and/or mastery of Yoga techniques occurring overnight, remember this very important tenet of Yoga basics—patience is indeed a virtue in the case of Yoga practices.

The fifth tenet of Yoga basics focuses on your diet.  Thus, if you are truly interested in reaping the full benefits of Yoga, you will at some point need to assess your eating habits.  Yoga is based on the “you are what you eat” philosophy and some Yogic practitioners place strict confines upon themselves in an effort to achieve the maximum benefits from their Yoga exercises.  Thus, in considering the Yoga basics, do consider whether or not you are willing to take a long honest look at your eating habits and whether or not you are willing to implement change.

Speaking of change, one of the most important Yoga basics that you must know is that you must be prepared for change.  To that end, you must also be prepared to change.  Yoga is a life altering experience for the better, as long as you are prepared to fully embrace its principles.  In the end, the result of your Yogic practices is completely up to you and your desire to succeed.
