Many people are surprise to find that Yoga is more than an exercise regimen.  In fact, Yoga is a philosophy that relies on a set of Yoga principles that every Yoga practitioner must follow in order to reap the benefits of its practice.  Further, you will find just as many individuals are surprised that Yoga is not a form of religion, but is a form of exercise that can be used to supplement any religious practice so that the spiritualist can achieve a closer connection to the divine.  Let’s take a look at the basic principles of Yoga a bit closer.
First among the principles of Yoga is that a practitioner should always express an unlimited amount of love for all living being.  As one of the most important principles of Yoga, a practitioner only serves to improve their own lives by learning to love and express that love openly.  It is expected that, if a Yoga practitioner adheres to the principles of Yoga that they do not act violently against another nor do the wish harm on any being, whether they be human or animal.

Second among the principles of Yoga, but not second in importance, is the idea that practitioners of Yoga should always speak and act with honesty.  Therefore, as one of the most important principles of Yoga, a Yoga practitioner must ever be aware that lying is a poison in and of itself that will only taint the life of the practitioner.  Lies always return upon their speaker, whether they be good or not.  Therefore, as a Yoga practitioner, be mindful of the principles of Yoga and speak with an honest tongue.

Third among the principles of Yoga, one will find a focus on integrity.  It is imperative that the practitioner of Yoga strives to become an individual that is above reproach.  Principles of Yoga are a set of guidelines for the practitioner of Yoga—guidelines that will help them improve their mental state and their physical well being if they are properly implemented.  Uprightness is central in Yoga and is also the basis for all of the other principles of Yoga—a pure body, a pure mind, and pure actions will help remove all obstructions between the Yoga practitioner and the divine.

A really important principle among the principles of Yoga is that of straying away from the excessive temptations of the mundane world.  Yoga is about achieving spiritual fulfillment and straying away from physical indulgences in any form they may be offered.  Thus, one of the most difficult of the principles of Yoga to adhere to is that of monitoring oneself in the face of indulgence.

Yet another of the Principles of Yoga is the practice of humility.  Yoga practitioners attempt to be humble at all times, as pride can be a dangerous foe to oneself should it get out of control.  Of course, humility also suggests that we learn to be satisfied with life’s dealings—remember that one of the principles of Yoga suggests to stay away from the excesses of physical fulfillment or monetary fulfillment and to focus on a reconnection with the spirit.

Finally, and most importantly, one of the principles of Yoga is to put a lot of care and focus on the self.  Not in an egotistically fashion, but in a loving way.  It is important to take care of the body so that the mind may be freed to focus on spiritual matters.  Thus, this is the most important of the Principles of Yoga and is equal to loving others—one most truly love oneself.
